Adopted Rescue Dogs Reunite for ‘Puppy Prom’ at San Diego Shelter
Adopted pets and their families recently reunited for a night of pure joy at Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 11th annual Puppy Prom in San Diego.
Held at McGregor’s Bar & Grill, the event welcomed back adopted dogs and their families for an evening of snacks, drinks, games, and even a “Best Dressed” competition. Many pups arrived in bowties, dresses, or full-on prom looks—ready to strut their stuff on the red carpet-style runway.
Now in its 11th year, Puppy Prom is all about celebrating adoption journeys. “It’s a silly and joyful night, but it also reminds us why we do what we do,” said Labeth Thompson, Pet Acquisition Manager at the center. “These dogs found loving homes, and it’s really special to see them come back.”
Guests spun the “Wheel of FURtune,” sipped drinks from a Make-Your-Own-MUTTmosa bar, and submitted prom photos for the Kitty Court competition (for feline alumni who couldn’t attend in person). Dogs competed for Prom King and Queen with a $20 entry, and the crowd chose the winners by applause.
Reigning champ Sir Fritzle von Vicious returned to defend his crown—and he did just that, winning King for the second year in a row. He was joined by Prom Queen CinaBella Buns, who’d previously been Princess. Other awards went to Buster and MaryJane (Prince and Princess) and Devin and Bonney (People’s Choice).
Beyond the fun and costumes, the night had deeper meaning for many attendees. Emily Navala brought her dog Donna, who struggles with social anxiety. “It’s a good way for her to be around other dogs in a happy setting,” she said. “And we get to have fun together too.”
Robin Missailidis, who adopted her dog Blue just a few months ago, said it felt like everything had come full circle. “We’re so grateful to Helen Woodward. Coming back here to celebrate is really special.”
Whether they went home with a crown or just a belly full of treats, every dog at Puppy Prom was a winner—surrounded by love and a reminder of how far they’ve come.
